Digitalis / Digoxin Toxicity Explained
Digitalis toxicity (Digitalis intoxication) often called digoxin toxicity results from an overdose of digitalis (digoxin or digitoxin) Digitalis / Digoxin toxicity can cause weakness, confusion, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Some patients suffering from Digitalis or Digoxin toxicity, may suffer from yellow vision in which objects and light appear yellow in color and blurred. Digoxin / Digitalis toxicity may also result in low heart rate called bradycardia and in increased or rapid heart beat called tachycardia. Digitalis / Digoxin/ digitoxin toxicity may cause severe weight loss due to the reduced appetite.
Digitek / Digitalis Recall
Digitalis is a medication prescribed to treat some heart patients with congestive heart failure, heart beat irregularities, heart failure and atrial fibrillation/atrial flutter. Digitalis toxicity is a complication of digitalis therapy, or it may be caused by an acute ingestion of digitalis. Recently the FDA recalled Digitek on April 25, 2008, a popular generic digitalis, due to many of the lots of Digitek were thicker and bigger in size containing double the strength. These Digitek tablets pose a risk of Digoxin toxicity or digitalis toxicity in patients specially with renal failure. Medical experts and the FDA have warned of serious digitalis toxicity for Digitek patients can result. FDA reports a number of reports of illnesses and injuries associated with digitalis toxicity. (See:Digitek Overdose Side Effects) The digitalis recall also include Bertek digitalis recall and UDL Digoxin recall, both like Digitek recalled due to the tablets containing twice (2 times) the appropriate level of digitalis.
Other Serious Digitalis Toxicity Complications
Digitalis toxicity and/ or Digoxin overdose can occur from a single exposure or chronic overmedication of digitalis, or it may occur in patients with normal blood levels of digitalis if other risks are present. People with congestive heart failure are commonly given diuretics along with digoxin. Many diuretics can increase the risk of digitalis toxicity due to lower levels of potassium. Another increased risk of digitalis toxicity can occur in digitalis / digoxin patients with renal or kidney problems, decreased renal function. This reduced kidney function will cause digitalis to accumulate in the body rather than being excreted normally through urine, thereby greatly increasing the chances of digitalis toxicity.
NOTE: Digoxin toxicity can occur in patients WITHOUT renal failure too.!!
